概要 | The aim of this study was to investigate the causes of maladjustment for short-term overseas students. In detail, we focused on three specific properties of their own culture, such as the expectation of maladjustment before moving to new culture, the sense of YUTORI in their own culture, and the intrinsic motivation for studying abroad. The expectation of maladjustment is the cognition before moving to new culture that: “I will be unable to adjust to the new culture.” Aside from this, YUTORI, a unique concept in Japan, is the idea that people spend their life with great amounts of stability or flexibility. For example, it may include time, composure and energy. The hypothesis of this study was that a low level of YUTORI and an intrinsic motivation and a high level of the expectation of maladjustment would lead to cultural maladjustment. On the one hand, the expectation of maladjustment may be a factor determining the early stages of cultural maladjustment; on the other hand, YUTORI may be a factor determining the overall stages of it. We might find out the continual effects of YUTORI by investigating long-term overseas students. |
