| 概要 | I have attempted to analyze marriage patterns and population mobility using the Japanese religious investigation registers of 16 villages around Kyoto and Osaka. Conventional wisdom has been that the sphere of marriages in pre-industrial Japan was closed. But I found evidence that people also chose their spouses from distant places. The birthplaces of brides and bridegrooms that married Keihanshin Region spread all over theinto the central Japan from the beginning of the18th century. It was closely related to the birthplaces of indentured servants working in the region. The information network satisfying the supply and demand of the labor market probably contributed to choice of marriage partner. |
